| A glimpse of the Cascade Mountains through the fog |
Hurray, a weekend getaway for my husband and me. But we awoke our first morning in a fog. Quite literally: enveloped in a dense white cloud. Our beach cabin was socked in, what pilots call zero visibility. Slowly, the fog lifted and over our noon meal we could finally spot the distant Cascade Mountain peaks jutting up and swatches of blue sky. And the tide was receding! Perfect timing for an afternoon stroll. However, moments after my husband and I bundled up to embark on our walk the fog was replaced by a new humungous cloud, hovering so low my hair literally got wet. Is there such a thing as 99.99 percent humidity? We walked anyway. An hour later, done with our beach walk and back in the house, my husband said, “Look out the window now.” The cloud had lifted and blue dominated the sky. Not fair!

January seems to be a white month for most of North America. I envision friends and family, their homes and streets covered with a blanket of frigid, white snow and/or low-lying clouds and rain.

What do you do on “white-out” days? Bake up a storm? Find a white sale? (household items) Take off for the mountains to ski or head south seeking warmth?

Congratulations to kjminspace for winning a copy of either Leaving Lancaster or Pennsylvania Patchwork from last week! Thank you everyone for your comments. They were fun reading!

Beautiful pictures! I’ve always wanted to at the very least visit the Pacific Northwest. Is it less humid near Eugene, Oregon? Have a wonderful week and thanks for your beautiful pictures!
Please do visit the Pacific Northwest! I’m not sure about the humidity near Eugene, but assume it’s pretty much as it is here. Well, maybe not. I just checked their weather forecast and it’s raining there, while we have had a nice dry day. Thanks for your kind words about my photos!
Great pics!!!! I’ve been to the Pennsylvania Amish areas and once in Indiana but that’s all. Can’t take the snow and cold any more though. Love the tea towel and would love to win Pennsylvania Patchwork!!! Judy Fritz
Thank you for writing, Judy! I’d love you to be in the contest, but need a contact email in case you win. The snow and cold have been brutal on the East Coast and Midwest so I’m enjoying our middle-of-the-road weather in the Puget Sound.
I love Amish fiction and would love to win this giveaway. Please stay warm in this arctic blast

Thanks for entering the contest, Wilani! Good luck! I’m definitely staying warm and hope you are too.
I love to read on bad weather days. But then again I love to read on good days. We have over a foot of snow right now on the ground. My car is buried not going anywhere so might as well read and bake. Baking helps warm up the house plus smells so yummy. Love to win.
Blessings

You’ve got a great idea, Diana! While you’re baking, you’re multitasking: warming the house (I can almost smell it from here.) and making time for reading. Sorry your car is buried! That can get old.
Nice pics

Why, thank you! Glad you enjoyed them. Good luck in the contest!
On a white out day I usually put a soup in the crock pot and bake a loaf of bread and cookies.
Would love either one of your books. Thank you
Oh, my, your house would certainly smell better than mine! Suddenly, I’m hungry … Thanks for entering the contest, Jackie!
What pretty scenes, Kate. Enjoy keeping up with your blog. These cold winter days and nites make for good reading opps! Hope to win your book and read that soon!
Sonja dot nishimoto at gmail dot com
Thanks, Sonja! I’m all for reading on a cold night. Good luck in the contest!
I get in the mood to sort & organize everything in sight. This makes my poor husband, the saver, pretty nervous. I cleaned out a pantry & made plans to better utilize other storage spaces we have throughout the house. Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder than today, so hoping to “hit the floor running” early tomorrow morning!
You’ll have the most organized house in town, Linda! In fact, I could use someone like you to help me. Keep warm!
I live in the cascade foothills right before you head over those beautiful mountains. On days like these, I love to stay home and read a good amish book (like yours).
Sounds like me, Sharyl! I love to snuggle in, stay warm, and read. Thanks for writing!
Beautiful photos! I’d love to visit the west coast one day. I’m near the east coast. Looking forward to your new book!

Thanks for writing and for entering the contest! I recall some nasty winters when growing up on the East Coast, but nothing like this!
We are having a white out-day, and very very cold. I did some baking of brownies, blueberry muffins and that helped warm the house up a bit. I would love to wrap up in a blanket, and read Pennsylvania patchwork, since that is where I am from! Thanks for having the contest!

Oh, my, I’d stay home too, Sharma! Your dinner menu sounds better than mine!

On a cold or white-out day, I spend time in my favorite chair, with my favorite blanket, hot tea/hot chocolate and a snack, scented candles burning, and a GOOD book!

Snuggle up with a book and hybernate. Love to win. Email swaltonmama42@hotmai.com
Sounds like the perfect remedy for cold weather, Sandy! Good luck in the contest!
When it gets cold and nasty outside, I love to curl up by my parent’s gas fireplace with a blanket, a warm beverage, and work on one of the many knitting projects that I always seem to be working on. I like to enjoy the simple things in life, as you may notice. 🙂 Hope I can win, Kate, and God bless!

We have a gas fireplace too, Mallory. I didn’t want it, but my husband persevered and I’m glad because it’s been great. Excellent that you knit! I admire people who consider it simple. Good luck in the contest!
