Each year on the 1st Saturday of May I enjoy watching the Kentucky Derby on TV! Not just to see the flamboyant and over the top hats or singing along to The National Anthem. I plain old love horses! One of the many reasons I’ve enjoyed visiting Lancaster County. One of the first things I warn my husband is to be careful of the horses on the road!

I started horseback riding lessons in the second grade. Then I attended a summer camp for several years with horseback riding. My favorite horse to ride there was a Tennessee Walker that I had exclusive rights to because of my light weight and I knew how to use an English saddle which didn’t weigh very much for this rescue horse. Then later in college I took horseback riding lessons to earn PE credits. I still recall the first day when the teacher had us jumping and I thought: I’m sure glad I already know how to ride a horse!

What an exciting race the 2026 Kentucky Derby was to see the last horse win! Makes me think of the scripture Matthew 20:16 “The last shall be first.” I love stories with unexpected endings, don’t you?

When I think of what the jockey must have been thinking as he trailed the other horses. He could have given up, but instead surged forward to win first place! The jockeys brother came in second place on the horse I thought might win, although I never, ever bet.

I’ve been working on a manuscript for what seems like forever. The first publishing house I submitted to sat on it for nine long months before rejecting it. But I will not give up! Perseverance, right?

Speaking of Perseverance, please enter my Giveaway to win a $100 Amazon Gift Card and one of my books! Winner has three days to respond. Winner will be announced May 13.

Wishing everyone who enters the best of luck!
