Am I the only one left who thinks boys and girls are different? In my experience, boys tend to be boys, no matter how much their mothers dislike their converting sticks into weapons or throwing rocks. And girls? Well, they are far more apt to like this little Amish-made doll.
Some might disagree. They could scoff at the fact that as a child I wanted to be like my mother. All nurture versus nature, they’d claim, not knowing that I was a bit of a Tomboy, who wasn’t afraid of spiders and snakes, and still am not. I suppose that could be chalked up to nurturing since my mother was fearless. And feminine. The consummate hostess, who considered my father head of the house.
Hey, wait a minute. Was I really a tomboy? I couldn’t and still can’t throw a ball worth a hoot. And I loved to play dolls with my sister.
In Amish homes, boys’ and girls’ roles are well defined, although there are Amish girls who prefer working in the barn and fields, and Amish men who are fine cooks. Some men even assist with kitchen cleanup. But after a strenuous day of work, most Amish men are gracious enough to allow the wife and daughters to claim that dubious pleasure. I’ve seen girls and women toiling in the field along side the men, especially around harvest time. And boys weeding in vegetable gardens.
Do you think coed bathrooms are perfectly fine? Would you mind your college student showering along side someone of the opposite sex with no privacy, a practice that’s been happening in colleges for years? I could not find one article on the Internet arguing that they’re wrong.
Recently our president installed the first gender-neutral bathroom in the White House.
What do think? Are the differences between boys and girls hardwired and should stay that way? Would you be willing to go to a conference at a college with coed dorm rooms ? Do you think we could learn a few lessons from the Amish?

I am glad you and your granddaughter like Amish dolls, Julia! Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
Maybe it all depends on the way you were brought up. Still to this day I don’t show any cleavage like some women do because I was taught it should be covered. I know the generation has changed so much now but its a scarey world out there and I prefer my privacy and to keep my private parts covered 🙂
Also….I would love an Amish doll to go with my collection of dolls 🙂
I agree, Carla! There’s a good reason the word private is used. Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
This is so cute! I would love a chance at winning!

Kate
I think times they are a changin’ i was a tomboy, purple was my color, i didn’t care for dolls but i grew up a fairly modest and well adjusted woman. i don’t have a problem with coed showers (in colleges) and gender neutral bathrooms. boys and girls are different, but they don’t have to fit into a mold either.
Thanks for a chance to win this precious doll, so adorable
Thanks for entering, Barbara! Good luck!
Thanks for writing and leaving a comment, Tara! Good luck in the giveaway!

I read mainly Amish books and stumbled upon Leaving Lancaster, truly enjoyed it, know about the dolls with no faces, although I never have seen one myself, someone is going to love your gift of a doll and a book -very nice of you to do that.
Thank you so much for leaving a positive comment about Leaving Lancaster, Alberta. I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed reading it. Good luck in the giveaway! Kate
I think there are definitely hard wired differences between boys and girls. But there are things that are taught as well. It’s a combination of nature and nurture.
It does seem to be a combination, Kathryn, according to research. Shows how important it is for parents to put full energy into raising their children. Thanks for writing and entering the giveaway!
Kate
i, too, believe there are girl/ boy differences! Our daughter loved the outdoors, swimming, riding bikes, but also loved playing with her baby dolls and stuffed animals!
Love your books, as you know, and would love to enter this contest.
I’m delighted to have you enter the giveaway, Karla! Thanks and good luck!

I love everything about the amish,i try to wtch all the shows
Thank you for visiting my blog and entering the contest, Kara! When watching “Amish” shows on TV, keep in mind that real Amish, those baptized into the church, will not allow themselves to be photographed. PBS put out two great documentaries that can be seen on YouTube, I think. Nowhere will you see an adult Amish face. Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
What a cute doll! And what a cool looking truck with all the pink trim. I know I wouldn’t want to go to a co-ed dorm. To me, that is just asking for trouble especially when you throw in the party atmosphere some colleges have. Thanks for the chance to win.
Thank you, Cindy, for leaving your comments! I thought that pink trim was darling too and agree with your other assessments. Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
My son is leaving for college this fall and I really don’t like the thought of coed bathrooms. Why do they feel the need to make changes to things like bathroom. Love the doll too!
When looking for a college for our son, I became aware of the coed bathrooms, Lori! As a woman, I’d prefer other women, particularly ones who were neat. Among other objections. Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
I would love to win this! So cute!
Thanks for entering the giveaway, Teresa! Good luck!
Kate
I enjoyed your article. I don’t like the idea of coed bathrooms, but then I am old school. Love the Martha doll. And I enjoy your books.
Thanks for visiting my blog and reading my post, Ruthann! I don’t understand the coed bathroom business either, so guess I am old school too. Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate

Kate
I may b old fashioned but I’m not to thrilled about college co-ed showers. I believe or feel that there are some things that stay private. But I could go on and on about that.
I enjoyed reading your “Series very much. Anytime I can get my hands on an Amish authors book-I am there!!
Thanks so much for your encouraging remarks about my books, Sharon! I’m with you on the coed showers. As if young adults don’t have enough temptations and problems. Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
I would love to win this Amish doll for my one year old granddaughter’s room
Thanks for entering the giveaway, Nancy! Give your little granddaughter a hug from me. I bet she’s a sweetheart.
Kate

Thanks for entering the giveaway, Robin! The Amish are indeed a fascinating people. I never grow weary learning more about them. Good luck!
Kate
I would like to win the doll. As for gender neutral bathrooms..that’s what we have in homes…as long as it’s single use, no problem.
Thanks for leaving a comment and entering the giveaway, Claudia! I agree about the gender neutral bathrooms in homes, and I see them and doctors’ offices. Why the big deal if only one person is using it at a time? However, coed bathrooms and showers in college campuses is another subject … Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
The world is changing but the Word of God does not change so what was sin in the past is still sin today. I would love to win the Amish doll to go with my collection. Thank you!
So true, Marilyn! It seems as though many wish to rewrite the Bible to suit their needs or simply ignore God’s Words altogether. Thanks for leaving your insightful comment and entering the giveaway!
Kate
I love to own an Amish faceless doll. I love to read about the Amish. I don’t think they should have coed bathrooms at college. They don’t have them in public schools, why have them at college?
You have raised some interesting questions, Tammy! I hope this slide in morality doesn’t spill into public schools. I’ve heard of some questionable classes that are taught, a reason many are turning to homeschooling. Thanks for commenting and entering the giveaway!
Kate
I think this world has gone crazy ,doing the things that’s happening now days. But what do I know ? I’m a senior citizen 😉 I would love to have this book and also the doll to go with the boy and girl doll I bought a couple of years ago. Thanks !

I couldn’t agree with you more, Cindy! It’s definitely time you read one of my Amish novels. Two of them are CBA bestsellers and I’ve done a great deal of research on the Amish, because I find them fascinating. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

Kate
I definitely think they there are differences between boys & girls that is mentally hardwired, but I can also understand boys liking to do things like housekeeping chores & girls wanting to work hard and get dirty outside. I really hope I can win this time Kate, as I collect Amish dolls & I would treasure her so very much! God bless!
Mallory, you are such a sweetheart for entering the giveaway and leaving thoughtful comment! Wishing you the best of luck!
Kate
I would love this doll. I would call her Katie after my favorite author. And to win the Amish doll and one of your books would mean the world to me. I
You make me wish I had a doll and an extra novel to give to every person who leaves a comment, Barbara! The winner is chosen at random, but I can wish you good luck!

Kate
I love all the Amish stories and books. Also, I admire the Amish for not putting faces on their dolls and not allowing their pictures to be taken (face view). I have read many Amish fiction books and would like to add yours to my collection. Thank you.
I would love you to add my books to your collection, Sharon! Thanks for writing and good luck in the giveaway!

Thank you very much, Elmina! Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
I cannot see my comment so I am rewriting yes boys and girls are different . no I wouldn’t go where both boys and girls shower side by side, I want privacy, I think that would cause more rapes and crimes. and the bathrooms would be ok if it was one user at a time like our homes
I like my privacy too, Debbie! I think coed bathrooms in colleges is a very sad trend and hope it doesn’t make it’s way all the way down to high school. In my home is one thing … Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
Kate, I agree with you, and yes I was a tomboy also, worked in the fields with big horses, and yet I LOVED LOVED to play doll and be feminine too. I have so many dolls for my grandchildren.
My boys worked in the kitchen and garden, but oh my, they would balance the broom handle on their hand while sweeping, to see how long they can keep it balanced, that was just one act of ALL BOY>>>They would take the drying cloth and swat each each other while drying dishes, the list goes on, like I said before, I need to write a book someday. LOL
Your comment really made me chuckle, Mary Alice! Makings for at least a short story or article for future generations to read. Thanks so much for writing and entering the giveaway!
Kate
I think bathrooms and showers still need to be seperate. I’m very old fashioned and conservative. Love the truck and first instinct would say it belonged to girl, but I bet it’s a boy. 🙂 Love the doll, would love to have a real one, and I read all books about Amish that I can get my hands on
I guess that makes me old-fashioned too, Andrea! I’d never considered that the pickup could belong to a boy, which I suppose makes me politically incorrect, as is most of my post. Thanks for visiting my blog and entering the giveaway!
