Am I the only person who hides things from herself? With the best of intentions, mind you. I did it again last week. Before company arrived, I dashed around picking up and straightening. In my hurry, I stuffed a mish-mash of business cards, pens, and do-dads into a plastic bag, and stowed them out of sight. And apparently out of mind.
A few days later, I checked every nook and cranny looking for the bag. On the bottom shelves of the dining room cupboards I scrutinized my collection of pink Depression glass that I rarely use.
I should add: An expert has never examined and verified that my glassware is genuine Depression glass. But I don’t care because I like it.
I can’t recall when my desire to amass pink glass started. I look blah in pink, but I like the color. Was that my impetus to buy it? My mother-in-law and sister fueled the flames by adding to my collection on my birthdays.
Are they antiques? No. Antiques should be over 100 years old, and of value or historical significance. I doubt my pink pretties are any of those. Items 50-years-old lapse into the realm of Collectibles. The time period 1950-1959 is generally referred to as Retro. Vintage, originally used to define bottled wine, now describes objects that recycled back into fashion: 1960-1979.
I was sad when one of my favorite shops, Funtiques, closed. I’d found many treasures there.
I think about Amish women poking around tag/garage sales and wonder what they might purchase. Nothing too fancy? You might be surprise to learn that fine China is a traditional wedding gift from many an Amish groom to his bride. As is stemware. Once married, the China is usually stored out of sight, and saved for special occasions.
The China may have a pink, fancy design if the bride so wishes. Amish Author Linda Byler describes this tradition nicely in her novel The Witnesses. (Linda Byler is actually Amish.)
Do you collect items you rarely use, but simply like? For instance, Pyrex? (Now that I think about it, I wish I hadn’t given away mine. Or are they hiding in the basement?) Teaspoons? Amish-made mementoes?
Back to my pink Depression glass. When I took the photo I noticed I had two little duplicate creamers. In my never-ending quest to downsize, I decided to offer one as a prize, along with this lovely Amish-made potholder from Lancaster County, PA. Plus a signed copy of one novel from the Legacy of Lancaster Trilogy! I’ve even found that treasures like this often show up in pawn stores, which makes the hunt for vintage pieces all the more fun. I love the pink glass. I have a few pieces handed down from family. One is a cake knife that belonged to my great grandmother. When I go to Amish country I love to go to the thrift stores and find old glass that is different. I have several little items that I have collected from the Amish country 🙂
What fun, Carla! I’d love to see your treasures. An Amish woman recently assured me Amish go to tag/garage sales and that her grandmother used a pink glass pitcher. Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
I love anything Amish, antiques. Vintage etc. Pink depression era items are my favorite. I have depression era crystal stemware from my parents wedding in the early 40’s.
Have a blessed day
You love pink Depression glass items too, Rita? I don’t feel so silly for amassing more than I use. I must get them out more often! Thanks for writing and good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
PINK is my favorite color. Would love to win. Thank You for the chance.
If pink is your favorite color, I’ll wish you extra-good luck in the giveaway, Angela! Thanks for leaving your comment.
Kate
I do collect items that I rarely if ever use, I love teapots and I have many platters, also into Disney, but the real love is teapots and now that I am 75 don’t know how to get rid of these items since my kids seem to think they are just junk, EXCEPT one grand daughter who I always played tea with when she was younger, now she is 14 but she claimed my huge teapot collection of 4 different sizes of the same pot with matching sugar and creamer for her own, hope she uses it and loves them as I do
I hope your granddaughter inherits and uses your teapots too, Alberta! What a fun choice to collect. (Not junk!) Glad I didn’t think of it or I’d also own more than I need. BTW: 75 isn’t that old anymore! Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
We have several colors of depression glass in our house….my husband collects it. No, you are not the only one that puts things away & forgets where. I am always putting things up for safe keeping & forgetting where I put them 🙁
Thank you for another great giveaway Kate!
Wow, your husband is unique, Lorraine. Fabulous! I am so glad to hear others say they hide things from themselves and then can’t find them. Some day I will locate my lost watch … Thanks for writing and entering the giveaway!
Kate
I love the pink or depression glass. It’s beautiful. I had a piece that was my grandmother’s and it was stolen when my house was broken into. This brings back memories of Granny!
Having your Granny’s Depression glass stolen would be awful, Jane! That’s the last thing I’d think a thief would want. Hey, a good storyline there … Thanks for writing and enter the giveaway!
Kate
I love your collection of pink Depression glass! My favorite color and yes in my neatness quest I am always misplacing stuff! On a different note the Amish General store I go to sometimes they have all kinds of dishes including some fancy glassware in different colors including pink. So far I’ve resisted! Love your giveaways. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Thanks for your fun comment, Linda! The Amish General store sounds intriguing and also dangerous for a person like me. I have another terrible habit: buying things I already have, so I can’t trust myself. Better to emulate you and resist. Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
Hi Kate, That is such a beautiful creamer! I don’t have any Depression Glass but I do have a few ceramic creamers to go with my tea cup collection. I find most of them at thrift shops and yard sales. When my husband and I were in Lancaster in 2012, I didn’t find any tea cups but I did find the coolest Retro clothes hamper. It’s made out of metal and is a faded Pepto Bismol pink with hand painted flowers on the front. I use it to store bed linens. 🙂
And I love Amish made pot holders. I bought several when I was there as gifts. They are very well made.
Have a blessed day!
Your teacup collection sounds delightful, Anne! I’ve also bought my favorite teacups at thrift shops. Your Retro clothes hamper sounds darling. What a find. Thanks for writing and entering the giveaway!
Kate
I collect Angels and Depression glass. Both are unique and beautiful.
Two lovely items to collect, Marilyn! And you describe them well. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!
Kate
Everyone in my family puts things “in a safe place”, and can never find them when we need them. 😀
It’s nice to know I’m not alone, Ann! I get the notion that if I put something valuable in a safe place a thief won’t steal it. But some of those items have never resurfaced. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. Good luck!
Kate
Love all your books….would love to win one…
Thanks so much, Nancy! Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate

Blessings
Diana
Thanks for writing, Diana! I treasure the pieces that once belonged to my grandmothers, but the pink Depression glass must have been my idea. Even my mother didn’t own any pink plates or glassware. Oh, I just remembered my favorite aunt loved pink. Hope you have a wonderful day and blessings to you!
Kate
Love all things Amish….have a few pieces of depression glass handed down from grandparents. Would love to win this.
Thanks for writing, Barbara! I’d love to add to your collection of Depression glass and also have you read one of my Amish books. Good luck in the giveaway!

I can’t wait for you to read my next book too, Donna! I usually don’t like surprises and need to reverse my thinking; that’s a great way of looking at losing things. Of course, it means you have to find them too and I’m not always successful. Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
I’m just happy to know that I’m not the only one that stashes things away and forgets about them. Loved the blog, Kate!
Good to hear from you, Dali! Also, good to know others stash things away and then forget about them. I recently misplaced a debit card, which I never use, but had to replace anyway. I figure the minute it comes the original will resurface. Thanks for entering the giveaway!

The depression glasses are exquisite . My mom collected salt and pepper shakers. When she passed away , I received them. The things we collect or handed down to us are treasures and waiting for someone to tell their story. Thanks for a chance at the beautiful prize.
Blessings
Deana
What fun that your mom collected salt and pepper shakers, Deana! I also treasure items handed down to me from my mother and grandmothers. Fortunately, my sister has little interest in them. Good luck in the giveaway!

I usually find my “carefully misplaced” items when I am looking for something else. Just a few days ago my daughter found something I haven’t seen in 10 yrs and forgot I still had. I would like to win the potholder because 95% of the books I read are Amish and the creamer because I like collecting cute coffee cups. <3
Oh, no, you have to wait 10 years to find my missing watch, Landis? Someday … I’m delighted you enjoy reading Amish books! Good like in the giveaway!
Kate
No, your not the only one that forgets where you put stuff..I put something somewhere where I KNOW I will remember where it is and its never there when I go to get it…I know i’m not loosing my mind…YET The pick glassware, I’ve always through was pretty, my mom use to collect it and before her passing, she got rid of it to make a little bit of money to survive..God Bless her…Thanks for the chance to win.
Thanks for writing and for sharing fond memories of your mother, Kathy! Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
Love your Books! So glad I’m not the only one who has to put stuff out of the way when company coming. I have collected, Hens on the Nest, for way to many years and have run out of places to put them, LOL!
Thanks for letting me know you love my books, Barb! Thoughtful of you to mention it. If I kept my house in better order I wouldn’t need to put so much away, but I’m bound to do it again. Good luck in the giveaway!
Kate

The depression pink glass is something my mom received as we arrived to Minnesota from Germany as new immigrants and eventually to become new citizens of this country. She received it as part of a little welcome to America shower by the local Methodist church. She still has this and of course I will inherit it. I have a few pieces that when I went antiquing in Minnesota I was able to pick up. Has a lot of sentimental value to me.
Thank you for writing and sharing the fascinating history of your mother’s pink Depression glass, Sonja! What a lovely present those church ladies gave her! I can imagine her collection holds great sentimental value to you. Wishing you good luck in the giveaway!
Kate
I have stashed away many things and find them years later…..even B-day cards and gifts! I eventually find them. I am known as a Super Hider! Awwwww pink depression glass, like you I started with one piece…..don’t know much about it but love it. I was admiring my great Aunt’s and she gave me a small dish. That is all I have…..at the moment…..it is so pretty…..not for sure what attracted me to pink depression glass wear….the color is my least favorite…… Unless worn by a baby or toddler! Just love it though.
You remind me of me, Linda! I am so attracted to pink Depression glass, but look blah when wearing the color. Thanks for writing and entering the giveaway!
Kate

My mother had the pink glass dishes! Sadly the one big move her and dad made; they were sold at the auction. And I would love to go into a store such as “Doilies”, but I may never find my way out:)
I could get in a lot of trouble in store like Doillies, Cynthia! I don’t need another thing, but that probably won’t stop me from at least looking. Thanks for entering the giveaway!
Kate
