A glimpse of the Cascade Mountains through the fog

Hurray, a weekend getaway for my husband and me. But we awoke our first morning in a fog. Quite literally: enveloped in a dense white cloud. Our beach cabin was socked in, what pilots call zero visibility. Slowly, the fog lifted and over our noon meal we could finally spot the distant Cascade Mountain peaks jutting up and swatches of blue sky. And the tide was receding! Perfect timing for an afternoon stroll. However, moments after my husband and I bundled up to embark on our walk the fog was replaced by a new humungous cloud, hovering so low my hair literally got wet. Is there such a thing as 99.99 percent humidity? We walked anyway. An hour later, done with our beach walk and back in the house, my husband said, “Look out the window now.” The cloud had lifted and blue dominated the sky. Not fair!

On our walk, a cloud enveloped the island

January seems to be a white month for most of North America. I envision friends and family, their homes and streets covered with a blanket of frigid, white snow and/or low-lying clouds and rain.

What do you do on “white-out” days? Bake up a storm? Find a white sale? (household items) Take off for the mountains to ski or head south seeking warmth?
