I met my husband on April 15. An easy date to remember! Also, the last day to file federal income tax or apply for an extension. If you don’t follow the IRS’s stringent rules, trouble abounds, plus penalties.
Are you thinking: Oh, goody, we get to pay our federal taxes even though we won’t decide where the money goes? Yesterday, the oldie Beatles song Taxman swam through my head as I gathered my writing expenses receipts. Fortunately, my husband’s accountant knows what he’s doing and is honest. My husband and I never mess with the IRS! I’ve known people who’ve tried, a few by mistake, and the horrendous penalties they’ve paid.
For example, one of my friends who lives in Canada got into a really difficult situation with her taxes. Fortunately, she was able to reach out to a team of Canadian Tax Amnesty Lawyers for some expert advice before things could escalate any further. Above all, no matter where you live, getting your tax return in order is crucial. Just remember, do not be afraid to reach out to a legal professional for help and support if you are unsure about how best to proceed. Ensuring you don’t find yourself in debt with specific taxes, such as GST or HST, is also crucial. However, things like this do happen, and professional legal help should not be overlooked if it does. Companies in Canada like Good Service Tax are able to help with any tax debt you may have got yourself into, and get you out of the tricky situation.
I believe we must support our military, but wonder where the rest of our mandatory federal tax donation money is spent.
I found it amusing when an economics professor told me the Amish of Lancaster County, PA, are poor. This fact she no doubt judged when reviewing the amount of federal taxes they pay, because she’s not seen their magnificent farms or herds of dairy cows. I explained most Amish farmers grow and preserve their own food, and milk their own cows. And their farms are magnificent, the acreage valuable. Many also work in factories or construction. A VAT Calculator can help simplify understanding how such diverse sources of income and property value may affect tax obligations.
Do the Amish pay taxes? An Amish friend from the Midwest answered my questions: “Yes they do, even if they don’t always agree with or participate in the ways the government spends their money. If a business is owned by Amish, yes applies to them as well, it is all state requirements and we have it plain in the Bible about what is required of us to honor the Obrigkeit.” (Mark 12:17, Matthew 22:12)
Amish pay federal and state taxes, such as property taxes, sales taxes, and public school taxes, even though most Amish send their children to Amish-owned and maintained one-room schoolhouses. Do you think that’s fair?
Amish consider Social Security an insurance program, which conflicts with their belief against participating in commercial insurance. Most Amish are exempt from Social Security. But my Midwest Amish friend wrote: “As with so many things in Amish life, this is in the differs-by-area category. I do not pay in for Social Security or draw it, as I am exempt. The younger generation do not exempt themselves anymore … I would guess it is 50-50. It is a ‘do what you choose thing’.”
Do you think it’s fair most Amish have the choice of being exempt from paying into Social Security? They care for their elderly and infirm. Many of us have paid into Social Security for decades. Will the well run dry?

Hi Kate….since my husband and I retired our taxes are not as bad as they used to be but neither is our income..we used to always get a nice refund but not anymore. My son and daughter in law were married on April 15..Love the Amish book reading and really like the purse. Wish I was as handy with sewing as the Amish are. Like that corvette too…..
Your son and his wife picked a perfect day to remember their anniversary, Judy! No excuses for forgetting. Thanks for your fun comment. I’m glad you enjoy reading Amish fiction … and that Corvette is cute. Good luck in the giveaway!

We usually try to get our taxes done at a fairly early date. I hate waiting to the last minute for anything! Would love to win this purse and a copy of one of your books!
Good for you for getting your taxes done early, Tiffany! Thanks for writing and entering the giveaway!
Kate
I would love to have that little white corvette as a tax write off lol. I always look forward to your emails.
That Corvette caught my eye or I wouldn’t have taken a picture of it, Debbie! I have a feeling the IRS would frown upon it. Thanks for your kind words about my emails and for entering the giveaway!

Well I am one of this who have still not done their taxes. I have big plans for the weekend and I can’t wait. I have a big date with turbo tax . We are meeting on line. My computer and I will spending the day crying, be frustrated and maybe a bit moody. But rest assured the date will be fun and in the end I will conquer the deadline and rejoice . I will rest up on Friday in anticipation of my big Saturday date. As a reward I would love to win the purse and a fabulous book . Thank you so much.
You’re still in good shape, Deana, but time to get organized! Wow, I’ve never heard of a date like that. Hope you have fun with Turbo and conquer the deadline. Thanks for your fun comment. Good luck in the giveaway!

We just completed our taxes and are pleased with our refund. It pays for our children’s homeschool and for that I am thankful. I love the Amish culture and I believe if they have a right to be exempt from Social Security. They do such a great job of caring for one another in their community and that is honorable. I would love to win the Amish made purse and your books, what a blessing that would be!
I can imagine you are pleased to receive a refund, especially if it pays for your children’s home schooling, Kelly! Thanks for sharing the good news and your thoughts about the Amish, and for entering the giveaway!
Kate

Thanks for writing and entering the giveaway, Mary! That cute little white car isn’t mine, but I can admire it from afar. What fun that the bag reminds you of a similar one you had when you were younger. Wonderful if you won it. Good luck!

This year i did not think tax time would be good. The lady that had did are tax’s in the past years has moved and it would take us 2 hours to get there. So we used a new place. But to my surprise it went well.
Three cheers for your new tax person, Jenny! This time of year a good tax return is the best news. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

Hello Kate
Enjoyed reading. We get our taxes done by Feb as soon as we know we have everything. I believe the Amish should not have to pay school taxes. Just like I believe the elderly shouldn’t either. School taxes should be paid but the ones who are using the school. Property taxes though should be paid by everyone. Social security should be everyone’s choice. But if you don’t put into it, you should not receive any of it. But I also believe they should somehow set up I do idual accts, and I believe the givnt should not be allowed to borrow from SS knowing that at some point there’s not gonna be anything there. They need to rearrange their funding to prevent touching funds that should be kept protected for the people!
