When you hear the words Comfort Food what do you think? Ice Cream? Mashed Potatoes? Popcorn? Amish Whoopee Pies?

I admit I’ve eaten a bowl of popcorn for dinner!
A friend recently told me that foods consumed by a child or pre-teen become that person’s comfort food for life. Really? I got online, started to research, and even came across tools that calculate TDEE and calorie needs, making it easier to understand long-term eating habits. Sure enough, I found studies proving he was correct.
On the other hand, I also read several articles based on studies claiming the consumption of Comfort Foods brings no comfort. During the testing, the “guinea pigs” might experience a fleeting time of comfort from anxiety, but no longer than the subjects who ate food they didn’t crave, or those who ate nothing.
One article claimed Comfort Food is a myth. The conclusion of a double-blind study proved that people give comfort food homage for an elevated mood, which would have occurred without the particular food.

Yes, I could find a treat in this case to elevate my mood!
What a surprise when I asked a dear friend if she had a comfort food. She sighed blissfully and said, “Yes, olive oil and vinegar over lettuce.” Huh?
So, I asked a neighbor, who told me she did enjoy desserts, but she didn’t consider them comfort foods.

Does Ice Cream beckon you from the freezer?
Now, I’m confused. Is the notion of Comfort Food a myth? Do you have a Comfort Food?
Do you think the Amish have Comfort Foods? Does all Amish food bring comfort?

Love the bag because I love covered bridges! There was one near me growing up, but some people purposely burned it down. 🙁 My comfort food is pretty much anything I’m eating at any given time. I think the Amish are just thankful and take comfort in all food provided by their Father above.
I love covered bridges too, Linda! So sad that someone burnt the one that was near you down. How wonderful that you find all food comforting. That’s got to make life easier. Thanks for entering the giveaway!

My go to comfort food was always chocolate chip or pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. Found I was gaining and my hubby got diabetes, so now no more comfort food. sigh…
I’ve never eaten pumpkin chocolate chip cookies before, Sonja, and they sound delicious! My husband and I are both on “altered” diets, so we’ve switched our comfort foods. It took a while but eventually my taste buds decided other foods worked too. But pumpkin chocolate chip cookies sound mighty good … and I still use whole whipping cream in my coffee. Thanks for entering the giveaway!

I think everyone has foods that give them the sense of comfort. Or brings back a memory. I have foods from childhood, chocolate pudding with a marshmallow face or cucumbers in cider vinegar. Then I have foods which take me back to living in Mexico…flan and refried beans with chorizo mixed in. Sugar cookies take me back to my great grandmas and homemade mayonnaise my grandmas.
I imagine that you had a loving childhood, Cynthia, by your lovely descriptions! Everything sounds delicious. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Good luck in the giveaway!

When my sister and I were taking care of our Mom who had Alzheimer’s, we really had a need for comfort food.
Her comfort food was anything that was salty and mine was anything that had sugar in it.
